The summit of Mt Ventoux

In a warming climate, there is one characteristic in wine that is increasingly coveted: freshness. This is why Ventoux, once a marginal climate for quality wines, finds itself in an increasingly strong position.

Although most of the appellation’s vineyards are at the foot of the mountain, vines are climbing ever upwards, and have now reached 550m above sea level. With Mont Ventoux’s summit at 1,912m, they’ve got plenty of room to grow.

I tasted 56 wines in ascending elevation to see when the freshness of altitude becomes discernible. I was expecting a clear correlation between height and freshness; the reality, however, is more complex.

Every year, Michel Chapoutier launches his Rhône single-vineyard wines way before his neighbours, and bang in the middle of the Bordeaux en primeur campaign to boot. You have to admire his chutzpah. Chapoutier never was a shrinking violet, and his wines are just as bold.

I’ll be visiting the Rhône in October this year to taste the 2023 vintage in more detail, working my way through every appellation, both north and south. In the meantime, this tasting always acts as a tantalising scent on the wind, a whisper of what’s to come.

An awful lot of wine is made under the generic Côtes du Rhône appellation. Around 167 million bottles in 2022, to be precise. And while much of this is pretty average, a small proportion transcends the appellation. The greatest of all is Château de Fonsalette.

It’s one of the three estates owned by Emmanuel Reynaud. The most famous of the three is Château Rayas in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. And although Fonsalette is not as well known, the wines are still extremely desirable. Hedonism Wines in London currently sells the 2009 at £580 per bottle.

As I drove into a small hamlet just north of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, I wondered which building was Château Mont-Redon. It quickly became clear that the hamlet was Château Mont-Redon.

The average Châteauneuf estate has 10 hectares of vines and a small, functional winery. Mont-Redon has its own petrol station and full-time mechanic to service its fleet of tractors. It’s big enough to have a library of older vintages going back decades. I paid a visit to find out if its reputation for exceptionally long-lived wines is merited.

Léa Bonnefond in the lieu-dit of Les Rochains.

The small Suzuki 4×4 came to an abrupt stop and we teetered at the top of a steep path in lieu-dit ‘Les Rochains’, high in the hills of Côte-Rôtie. It had been raining all day and the ground was a slick of slippery brown mud. The Rhône was flowing grey in the valley far below us. Léa Bonnefond flicked a button on the dashboard and the car switched to four-wheel drive. She pushed the accelerator, and down we went.

The cover of my notebook still displays my fingernail marks, but Bonnefond was unconcerned – just another day in the vines for this 26-year-old, who grew up next to the winery in the tiny hamlet of Mornas.

When I saw the first upside-down village sign, I put it down to some bored, teenage prankster. But as I drove through one village after another on my way to Séguret, every village sign had been inverted. It transpired that this was a sign of solidarity for local farmers who feel under attack.

Their protests have since made headline news around the world, as agricultural workers have blocked roads and dumped manure in front of municipal buildings across France. There are many tangled grievances: burdensome paperwork, painful taxation, increasing energy bills, rising prices of other goods, and competition from cheap imported food and drink.

When choosing a wine, consulting tasting notes can offer some valuable insight. We can all be guilty of just scanning for scores, but when picking a wine to drink now, there’s a more important number to look at – the ‘drink from’ date.

A question of pleasure

When I visited Jean-Louis Chave last October I was lucky enough to taste something very special: his 2020 Cuvée Cathelin. It’s a Hermitage bottling he makes only in the best years. I also tasted a mature vintage of his classic Hermitage, the 2001, a less vaunted year.

Which was better? No question – the 2020 Cuvée Cathelin. Which would I like to drink? That’s easy – the 2001 classic Hermitage.

Chapoutier Monier de la Sizeranne

Have you ever noticed that some labels on Chapoutier’s wines feature braille as well as printed text? I asked Michel Chapoutier how this came about.

The wealthy de la Sizeranne family lived in Tain l’Hermitage and had three children. One of them, Maurice, was blinded while playing with a bow and arrow aged nine years old. As an adult, Maurice de la Sizeranne (1857–1924), devoted himself to working for the benefit of blind people, and one of his achievements was to develop an abbreviated form of braille.

The Chapoutier family bought some prime Hermitage vineyards from the de la Sizeranne family, and named its top wine ‘Monier de la Sizeranne’ in their honour. In 1995, Michel decided to add braille to the labels, partly to make his wines more accessible to visually impaired people, but also to remember Maurice.

Well, this is awkward. Top of the list of my wines of the year isn’t a Hermitage or Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but an IGP Côtes Catalanes. Given the amount of memorable Rhône wines I taste each year, it might come as a surprise that the number one spot goes to a wine from the Roussillon. But there’s no denying it. No wine made more of an impression on me in the last 12 months.

Ridley Scott and family's Mas des Infermières has launched wines in the UK
Mas des Infermières from above.

Sir Ridley Scott and family work with a winemaking team to produce their own wines at Mas des Infermières in the Luberon area straddling Rhône and Provence, and the range is now available in the UK, said the estate.

It’s a second major launch in recent weeks for the celebrated film director, who’s back catalogue includes Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator.

Scott directed and produced Napoleon, based on the story of Napoleon Bonaparte, which debuted in UK cinemas in late November following a premiere screening for the film in Paris.

Mas des Infermières claims a distant connection with the French emperor and military commander, having once been owned by General Baron Robert, a ‘health officer’ in Napoleon’s army.

Red, white and rosé styles are produced at Mas des Infermières under the guidance of estate director Christophe Barraud and cellar master Fabien Lacassaigne.

This includes the ‘Source’ and ‘Chevalier’ Collections, with prices starting from £25.45 and £35.95 respectively in the UK, as well as red wine Ombre de Lune, which combines 90% Syrah and 10% Grenache with a recommended retail price of £112.

Wines are available via The Modest Merchant and at London restaurants, including Akoko, Fallow, Carousel, Ham Yard Hotel & Straker’s, the estate said.

Ridley Scott himself sketched artwork for the wines’ labels, added the estate, which lies close to ancient citadel Oppède-le-Vieux in northern Luberon. The Luberon appellation sits at the south-eastern tip of the Rhône Valley wine region.

Each bottle of Mas des Infermières wine has been certified under France’s ‘Haute Valeur Environmentale’ (HVE) sustainability programme, the estate said, adding wines have also been awarded ‘bee-friendly’ status.

Scott and family have owned the estate since 1992, yet the first ‘independent’ vintage was only released in 2020, following the construction of winemaking cellars.

The family previously sold grapes to another local winemaker, although Source was the name given to the first vintage produced by the family in 2009.

Classic memorabilia collected during Scott’s illustrious cinematic career can be found on display at Mas des Infermières, which is open to visitors wishing to taste the estate’s wines and olive oil.

Three residences, all with their own private pool and garden, can also be privately rented.

According to Michel Chapoutier, the best way to eat a lark is to stuff it with foie gras, grill it, then eat it whole, bones and all. I’m tempted to try it, but they’ve been consistently out of stock at my local Tesco supermarket. He adds that they go very well with white Hermitage.

In French, a lark is une alouette, one of the small game birds, along with thrushes and woodcocks, that were once hunted in this part of the Rhône. The small building you can see on the label of Chapoutier’s Chante-Alouette cuvée is an old hunting lodge that still exists on the hill of Hermitage.

Young Côte-Rôties are normally fairly easy to read, but that wasn’t the case with the 2022s. Many of them appeared very fruity, with soft structures, lacking energy and aromatic detail. There were some excellent exceptions however, often from those originating from old vines grown on schist and fermented with a proportion of whole bunch.

Cornas

It was particularly dry in Cornas, with about 100mm of rain between April and harvest, according to Pierre Clape. It’s no surprise therefore that the ripening blockages are felt more keenly here than elsewhere in the north. ‘But the leaves stayed green, in contrast to 2003,’ says Clape.

Tannins can be difficult, rough and fibrous in places, but, both here and elsewhere, sensitive use of oak has helped to paper over the cracks and add some palate weight.

Hermitage 2022

It’s an unusual style of red Hermitage this year: smaller in structure and stature than a usual year. Again, as with other appellations, it’s primarily down to problems with ripening – Guillaume Sorrel said it didn’t rain at all on the hill of Hermitage in June, July or August, and Maxime Chapoutier remembers the mercury hitting 40 ̊C as early as June.

After the disastrous 2021 vintage, 2022 is certainly a step up, though stylistically it couldn’t be more varied.

Northern Rhône 2022

Northern Rhône 2022 overall vintage rating: 4/5

Diverse in style and quality due to intense heat and drought. Blockages in ripening were widespread around Cornas and Hermitage, making for some lighter wines with moderate alcohol; others more robust. Côte-Rôtie tends to be soft and velvety. Whites can be overly rich but some are enjoyably powerful and exuberant.

‘Most will drink young and into the medium term, but the more tannic, structured wines will take a long time to soften, then age for decades’
